“The Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. We call these patterns, tangles. You create tangles with combinations of dots, lines, simple curves, S-curves and orbs. These simple shapes are the “Elemental Strokes” in all Zentangle art. These patterns are drawn on small pieces of paper called “tiles.” We call them tiles because you can assemble them into mosaics.”

“Zentangle art is non-representational and unplanned so you can focus on each stroke and not worry about the result. There is no up or down to Zentangle art. If fact, you can most easily create Zentangle art by rotating your tile as you tangle — always keeping your hand in a relaxed position. You don’t need to know what a tangle is going to look like to draw it. You just need to know the steps. The result is a delightful surprise.” https://zentangle.com/pages/what-is-the-zentangle-method

It was in 2012 that I read an article about Zentangle. I was intrigued by the article I read about what appeared to me to be a mindfulness practice in the form of “art therapy.” I have never considered myself an artist, I decided to try it out. I ordered a kit from the Zentangle website and for the next few years I used books to practice with.

In 2018, I moved to Rhode Island. When I knew I was relocating I looked up the next teacher training offered by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas, the founders of the Zentangle method, which they hold in Providence, Rhode Island. In November 2020, I was able to attend their first virtual Teacher Training seminar – CZT#36.

My primary reason to take the training was for my own personal practice of Zentangle. Since completing the seminar and becoming a “CZT”, Certified Zentangle Teacher, I am now offering classes to share with others so they may have their own experience of the Zentangle method. I believe that the best way to learn is from a teacher after having my own experience of learning from books.
